Spring is starting to sprung!

I keep having the song, "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" running through my head but I keep trying to subject to Christmas for spring but it just doesn't have the same ring. Nevertheless, spring has sprung in our neck of the woods. Although that doesn't mean we still can't have one or two or even eight more snowstorms. I took my camera out when I walked down to get my oldest off the bus a few minutes ago and this is what I'm seeing.

Our driveway has become a slippery mudslide. It does every spring. At first we tried to keep it smooth but it just made it worse so we deal with it for a couple of weeks and then take the drag and smooth it out. It does make coming up the driveway fun but once you start up don't stop!! :)

And the last pictures, those are buds starting on the trees. YAY FOR SPRING!!!!

And yes, that is a scarecrow and ghost still in the front yard from last fall. Ahem...I'll take it down finally once the snow melts.  :)

Blessings,
Lisa

  1. This is our first winter on our little homestead and our driveway looks worse than yours. So you say that grading/leveling actually makes it worse? We've been doing so, and then have trouble maneuvering. I'll suggest that we stop and just deal with it for a while to see how that goes.

I just mailed our order for 50 chicks. We're going to raise meat rabbits, too. I would love to add lambs and a steer to our menagerie!

  2. At least for us it makes it worse because we do have a lot of clay and it seems to just make it soupier (I'm not sure if that's a real word!). We do take a shovel and make sure the water has a way to drain off the driveway.

What we really need is a couple of loads of limestone and gravel but we're saving our pennies so when we do it, we do it right.

We have rabbits and raised them one year but ended up selling all of them because I couldn't stand the thought of butchering or eating them. So now the original two rabbits we have left are just our little pets!

  3. I blogged about our mud today because Dad got stuck in it. ;-) We've trenched a few times to drain off what we can.

So limestone and gravel might be the ticket? I'm torn. It's such a mess that I want to address it, but we don't have the money at the moment. When we do have the funds, I'd rather put in our permanent driveway. Right now we're using an easement. Decisions, decisions.

We're outside of Tomah. If you don't mind sharing, whereabouts are you all?

  4. Part of our decision to hold off on the limestone and gravel is deciding if we're going to move the driveway. We know at some point we are going to build a different house on this property but we can't decide quite where we want it to be put. We have a big front yard but a small backyard and I'd rather have that reversed. So we hate to spend money on the driveway to only move it!! :) So we put up with it for 3-4 weeks in the spring and then drag out the ruts.
And of course, by the time we have money saved, it's deciding on where to spend that money and the driveway usually loses. This year, the driveway will probably lose out to doing some work on the barn.

We live about 20 minutes west of Menomonie.
